Equine Guided Therapy for Mind, Body, and Soul

As I approach the final stages of my master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, I am thrilled to announce that Equine Guided Therapy (EGT) will be coming to Wild Willow Ranch! This innovative approach to mental health treatment merges the powerful bond between humans and horses with evidence-based therapeutic techniques, and I am eager to bring this unique modality to those seeking a deeper connection and healing.
What is Equine Guided Therapy?
Equine-guided therapy is a form of experiential therapy that involves interacting with horses to promote emotional growth and healing. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EGT engages clients in non-verbal, experiential activities with horses, allowing them to gain insights into their emotional and behavioral patterns through these interactions.
The core of EGT lies in the profound, intuitive connection between horses and humans. Horses, as highly sensitive prey animals, are adept at picking up on human emotions and body language. This makes them exceptional mirrors for our inner experiences. Through guided activities with these magnificent creatures, clients can explore their feelings, build self-awareness, and develop new coping strategies in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.
Please note that currently, Wild Willow Ranch does not plan to offer riding therapy. Our equine-guided therapy sessions will be conducted on the ground only. If you are looking for riding therapy, we are happy to help find you the right program for your needs at other fantastic locations.
Why Equine Guided Therapy?
What to Expect
In the upcoming sessions, clients can expect a range of activities designed to facilitate personal exploration and growth. These may include:
Equine-guided somatic practices offer a powerful way to reconnect with your body, emotions, and presence—guided not only by a skilled facilitator but also by the grounded, responsive presence of horses. These practices support personal healing, growth, and awareness through embodied experience and the unique relational space that horses naturally create.
At their core, somatic practices are about tuning into the body as a source of wisdom, regulation, and expression. When we bring horses into this process, we enter into a nonverbal, deeply attuned relationship where the horse responds honestly and immediately to our body language, energy, and intention.
Equine-guided somatic work may include:
These practices are gentle, intuitive, and designed to meet you where you are—no horse experience necessary.
In our modern, fast-paced lives, it's easy to become disconnected from the body, caught in habitual stress responses or patterns of tension that go unnoticed. This disconnection can impact our relationships, creativity, sense of safety, and overall well-being.
Horses, as prey animals, are exquisitely attuned to the nervous system states of those around them. They offer immediate, nonjudgmental feedback that can help bring unconscious patterns into awareness. Through this co-regulatory experience, equine-guided somatic practices can support:
Sessions are facilitated in a calm, supportive environment, often outdoors in natural settings. You may begin with stillness or meditation, allowing your body to settle and attune to the environment and the horses. From there, you'll be gently guided through somatic explorations—whether that's breath work, movement, or interaction with a horse.
You might lead a horse through a simple pattern, noticing how intention, posture, and internal state affect your connection. You may be invited to pause, reflect, or simply be in presence with the horse—allowing insight to emerge organically.
Every session is unique, and we invite you to be open to exploring.
Your donations support our community programs and meditation with horses, as well as our horse rescue efforts. With your help, we can maintain and expand our impactful initiatives, enriching lives and fostering a deeper connection between humans and horses.
